Ok so we see that the Saxon Shore defense system was on both sides of the English Channel and usually near water ways. They were some distance away from each other and Rome. To keep in communication with each other and Rome the Romans erected small signal stations or towers. The Romans could send a message from England to Rome in a day using signals.

The Saxon Shore defenses faced a number of invaders which included Angles, Saxons, Franks and Jutes. All crossed the English Channel from northern Europe. They came in boats of course. Often they would raid and eventually they would settle in England.

As mentioned the eakest part of the fort are it’s gateways. While not shown would be the range markers. The Romans would place markers so they could estimate when to start shooting at the enemy with their catapults.

The Romans gave us the name the Saxon Shore (above title). Perhaps they should have called it the Saxon Shores as the defense system which it was had forts on both sides of the English Channel. In England I believe that there were 9 forts in England. Most of these were on the sea shore or rivers. At this time England was considered part of the the Gallic Provinces. Although England and Gaul (France) had subdivisions of a diocese.

Plan of Portchester

At Portchester the Romans returned to their most common method of building forts. It is very symetrical being equal on all sides with similar but not identical towers on three sides. The walls were so substancial that in later centuries a Norman castle would fill one corner and these remains can still be seen today.
