Typical Roman wagons

above are two two wheeled vhicles which we call wagons of carts. The Romans would call them cars. Transport was very important to the Romans. The forts and armies required tons of food and military goods. Boats from across the English Channel brought in food, supplies and soldiers’ pay on a regular basis.

The local population would also need wagons to carry their goods which the Romans bought when supplies from the continent could not be had.

These came from the continent of Norther Europe across the English Channel and the Baltic Sea.

At first they came to rob and later they came to settle the island. These gave the area along the sea it’s name-The Saxon Shore. The Roman army in England left for good in or about the 425 A.D. With the Roman army gone the local people had to defend the island against many different barbarian invaders. Eventually the island would be called Saxon England.

There were man different kinds and styles of wagons and carts. Just like today we have different styles of automobiles. Here we see a very important style of wagon in the center of the photo. It is entirely covered in heavy wood much like a house. Inside would be seats and storage. It is brightly painted. In the film King Arthur we see wagons very similar to this one. The wheels in front would turn left and right just like a modern car.

A common method of fighting that would be used well into the Middle Ages was the shield wall. The soldiers stood close together completely covering themselves with their shields. Notice the sheld patterns and long spears.

The Romans called this the Testudo. The Barbarians (Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Franks called it a shield wall.

Raidrs from across the English Channel would use man different methods of attack to capture a fort or town in Roman Britain (about 420 to 600 A.D.). Here the commander would issue orders each morning. The commander lived here. There would be offices for orderlies. The legion or unit’s standard were kept here too. Most importantly was the soldiers pay and bank. The barracks would be what we call frame houses. The base of the walls would be of stone or brick. Each corner and wall were upright timbers. Between the up rights is what is called a membrane. This was made of wicker which was plastered over and painted with white wash. Each window had shutters. The roof could be either Roman tile or slate.

Not the use of color around the doors and upright timbers.

It comes from a book called the Notes on Dignitaries or Notable Dignitaries. This book lists the names of important Roman Officials, army units, places where they served and from the notation of places we find the term Saxon Shore.

The Saxon Shore was along both the coasts of England and Northern France. Here the Romans bult permanant forts and communication towers. The forts protected the interior from both invasions and revolutions from within the Empire.

The Saxon Shore’s name might mean the area where Saxons from Germany might land and invade England.
